Mosh Play Live made its first foray to Las Vegas to catch a killer heavy metal line-up with Overkill, Exhorder, Heathen and Sunlord at the 24 Oxford, located inside the Virgin Hotel, in Las Vegas. Fortunately for us air conditioning has been invented and we were spared the 117 Fahrenheit temperature outside. As cool as it was indoors, this tour is hot!

Old school metal fans rejoice, this is a tried and true old school thrash metal show and all bands on the bill delivered. Sunlord was an unexpected treat to start the evening. The band hails from New York City with metal and punk vibes that have grown from their start in 2004 as a Slayer tribute band.

Heathen continued the evening’s festivities, formed in San Francisco in 1984, they carried the old school thrash sound into 2023. They closed their set with classic "Hypnotize." Bonus points to lead singer David White for coming to the front row of the pit to meet fans during the set change.

Next up was Exhorder who turned it up to 11 and the fans responded in earnest with the beginning of the first of many mosh pits during the evening, throwing the crowd into a frenzy playing songs off Mourning of the Southern Skies, The Law, and the classic Slaughter in the Vatican. Their ferocity won the crowd over this evening.

Overkill came out and did what Overkill does best, playing thrash metal loud and fast. I have never been disappointed by an Overkill show and this was no different. On tour in support of their new album Scorched, they played some new songs off the album including "Scorched" and the heavy, heavy song "The Surgeon". I hope this is a new standard in their setlist, awesome sounding live. Then they took us back to the 80’s with Overkill classics "Powersurge," "Coma," and "Horrorscope" just to name a few. Your favorite Heavy Metal Hippie had a blast in the pit, feeling like he was 18 all over again, old school pits abound and plenty of fun to be had.

My only negative to this had nothing to do with the bands, but with members from the audience. There was one good fight in the pit due to a cheapshot artist in the pit. Security responded and did not stop others from enjoying good moshing. Our very own Veronica had unfortunate interactions with a couple of men in the crowd. While neither event had anything to do with the tour, it did leave a negative feeling post show.

Overkill bucks the trend of expensive tickets and this tour puts to shame shows that cost three times as much. This tour did not disappoint.

Peace, Love and Mosh Pits,

Scott
