(Waimea, Hawai'i 1.8.2025) I love the drive from Hilo to Waimea. I find the gradual change in scenery some of the most beautiful on the Big Island, from the gulches to the cattle lands on one side and the ocean on the other. It offers spectacular scenery from either side of the car.
We arrived at Uila Records and quickly found our seats, knowing it would not be too long before the store was filled and we were right. The show started about 6:30 p.m. Once the chords and drumbeats played by Kauz of Affliction (KOA) started seeping through the walls to the outside, the music attracted folks. Eager to catch what was going on, they filed in and found seats, sometimes dashing to Pau Pizza next door and returning with something yummy.
While we are not at liberty to talk rumors, let's say 2025 and 2026 are shaping up to be something special for our friends at KOA. KOA ran through their setlist with Gas Station Burrito, Baba Yoga and since there were no kids attendance their sing along, “The F**K Song.”
After a short intermission, Squeaky and Hal of Cut-Rate Druggist took the stage. If you haven’t seen our interview with Cut-Rate Druggist you can view it on our YouTube channel. The first thing that will catch your attention is the high level of energy from the duo from Oakland, lead singer/bassist Squeaky was flailing around the tiny space, high kicking and playing some serious bass.
Both bands had to keep the volume down for respect to the neighbors, with tight quarters they were unable to unleash the sound and energy normally associated with their sets. But make no mistake, both Veronica and I really enjoyed the 10-song set including the opener “Show Your Teeth,” and rocking through “On My May’ and “Have You Seen Here.” Even though there isn’t room for a moshpit, Veronica found a corner to dance in.
We are really looking forward to seeing them again on January 10th with T.S.O.L. in Kona. Speaking of that show, Kauz of Affliction and El Sancho are on the bill! Shout out to Alan from El Sancho for making the drive to Waimea last night. There is still time go get tickets for the show. This is a rare treat to see punk rock legends.T.S.O.L. . We will be there with everyone, you’ll see us dancing and hanging out with everyone. Come say, “Hello.” and enjoy the show. We will have a recap up on Saturday.
Uila records has weekly performances. Make the drive to Wiamea, if you go early you can buy some vinyl and then catch a show. They have a great thing going on, get out and support. The cost of admission also entered fans into a raffle. The first number drawn, earned the lucky winner an Uila Records hat. And the second number drawn resulted in an Uila Records t-shirt.
Cut-Rate Druggist and Kauz Affliction aren’t done yet, they will also be at Kailoki’s in Ocean View on Saturday, January 11th and then Honolulu on Sunday, January 12th. Come out and support live music and we’ll see you in the pit.
Peace, Love & Mosh Pits
