Stars, Reggae, Rockin' Blues

Graham

To truly live on the Big Island means embracing transformational moments. For MoshPlayLive that means music. We are linked by sound and rhythm, every genre brings all of us together. On March 28th, two award winning musicians will take the stage at the Blue Dragon Tavern and Cosmic Musiquarium in Kawaihae. We celebrate how sometimes once in a lifetime isn’t enough.

Two-time Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner Larry Dupio and Jack Miller, member of the American Reggae Hall of Fame, performed together in the 1980s and ‘90s. Back then it was Jack Miller and the Big I Band.

Miller started in the Midwest, moved to the West coast and from there to the island nation of Jamaica. Reggae became a part of him. Dupio started on Oahu, also spent some time on the mainland’s West coast. The guitar became a part of him. Fast forward through travels and experiences to this moment when both artists call East Hawaii home. Their reunion celebrates local roots and a shared love of music.

Jack Douglas Miller, a renowned singer, songwriter, and filmmaker, played a pivotal role in introducing Reggae music to the States. He traveled to Jamaica and developed a love for the reggae sound. These experiences led to producing a comprehensive documentary, “Dreadlock Rock: The Story of Reggae Music,” offering a deep dive into the history and evolution of Reggae. In recognition of his contributions, Miller was inducted into the American Reggae Hall of Fame in 2015.

Drumson and DJ Opulence will join Jack Miller on stage at the Blue Dragon Tavern & Cosmic Musiquarium on March 28, 2025. Drumson Richardson is a singer, songwriter, sax player, delivers distinctive vocals and raps to the music of reggae/dance super group 420MUSE’s music. DJ Opulence (Andy Freeland) co-founded Synthesis, a pioneer in dance music workshops and travels the world to share his music.

And to bring the night to the next level, Rockin' Blues with Larry. He shared a memory with us of how music affects an audience. He was playing a concert in Sweden and during one performance, a six-foot-something Swede plucked him from the stage and carried Larry on his shoulder through the audience. Nothing stops the music, Larry just kept playing. Imagine this for a moment, combine that level of skill joined with with these three talented Big Island musicians: Yumbel Marassi on bass, Dustin Toma on drums, and Jason Sherbundy at the keyboard.

Don't miss this special event and be sure to get your tickets early at bluedragontavern.com. MoshPlayLive has enjoyed memorable evenings of music at this venue and anticipate this night to be . . . unforgettable.
