Cherry Poppin' Daddies Recap

(Hilo, Hawai'i, 12.13.2024) So much energy during the Cherry Poppin Daddies show.. We had the feeling of standing in line at those amazing large concerts. We had just received our bracelets when Two Years Apart started off the evening with “Johnny B. Goode.” The audience danced and cheered for including an original tune in their set. They ended with a raucous rendition of “Toxicity." The crowd had been worked into a frenzy, and yelled for the band to give them one more song.

Jackie Chan the Band was up next. I was really looking forward to this one, having caught snippets of their shows online. They said, “the bass player was playing the songs on stage for the first time.” The band’s regular bass player was on the mainland, with the rumor going around of visiting the girlfriend. This band must have been good as I got very few pics and zero video. My mind burns with the image of some ‘Big Sweaty Guy’ stomping around the stage in a kilt.  MoshPlayLive met up with the band after the show and we look forward to doing an interview with them very soon!

Kauz of Affliction kept the crowd and the pit moving.  Erik, Justine and Sean continue to put on solid shows one after the other. Simone, the robot-drummer, is taking a break, and stays on stage in her pretty pose. A really big shout out to Erik and Justine for all the hard work they put in behind the scenes, without them the Big Island music scene would not be where it is now. So, if you see them on the bill, catch the show, and maybe bring them a gas station burrito.

Headliners Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, a 7-piece ensemble, stormed the stage with their mix of swing and ska. They kicked off with “Zoot Suit Riot” and did not slow down with “Steamroll” getting the pit going. It was a different style of pit, friendlier, with people more bouncing and swinging around, with different movements, elements of punk and ska scattered in to create  a lot of fun for everyone involved.  Cherry Poppin' Daddies ran through a 20-song set. They sounded tight all night long, playing “Slapstick” and “Pool Shark” amongst others. The crowd outlasted the band, and were  screaming for one more as the band walked off the stage.

The Crown Room at the Grand Naniloa Hotel is such a great venue, with ample parking and easy access, this is a great venue to see a show.  To everyone dancing around in the pit last night, we had a blast with you all night long.  Speaking of the pit last night, it was cool to meet fans and show off/discuss injuries sustained at last weekend's Strung Out show. Thank you also to Paul and Yisa Var for their work at these shows, you’ll see them out at every show doing behind the scenes work. The Big Island has so much talent, get out and support live and local music. See you in the pit.

Peace, Love & Mosh Pits
