Album Review: King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard

PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation

Vying for the longest album title in music history, Australian band, King Gizzard and the

Graphic of vinyl record albums arranged in a storage cabinet with the words new music.

Lizard Wizard (KGLW) unleash their 24th(!) album, not counting the numerous live albums, EP’s or compilations released.. A long-term favorite of the jam band scene, KGLW continue to expand their sound. MPL was first introduced to KGLW in 2018. Veronica picked up the album for the band name alone and the local record store gave it a great recommendation. We listened to 2016’s Nonagon Infinity and we were both hooked. To say KGLW is an active band would be an understatement, they released six (6) albums in 2022.

A combination of jam band and heavy metal, they bring a unique sound that bridges many musical genres. Fans have been flocking to their shows including several sold out shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard will be playing shows starting their 2023 summer tour in Hollywood, California on June 21st, in Australia on July 22nd and then crisscrossing Europe starting in Sweden on August 12th.

Their new album, clocking in at 48 minutes with seven (7) tracks, focuses on environmental collapse - think Godzilla. This album definitely shows off KGLW’s heavy metal vibe, with loud guitars and thunderous drums. KGLW take you on a journey that requires numerous play- throughs to fully appreciate. Highlights for me include the opener, "Motor Spirit, Witchcraft and Dragon." There’s not a weak track on this album, but give it a listen and decide for yourself.

Peace, Love and Mosh Pits
