Trey Wonder and the Graveyard Thunder at KaiLoki's (Recap)

(Ocean View, Hawai'i. 12.21.2024) I love Big Island road trips, adventures abound, excitement ensues and once again Mosh Play Live loaded up the truck. This time we headed out on Highway 11, the same route as Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. We traversed desert and mountain and walked along seaside cliffs before arriving at our final destination, KaiLoki’s in Ocean View.

Trey Wonder and the Graveyard Thunder were already on the outdoor stage playing away, when we arrived, eager to get the night underway,   For full disclosure we headed inside for a table and food first while the band played outside on the stage providing some enjoyable dinner music.

It was good to see Trey, AJ Slay and Steve back on the stage.  They returned with plenty of new songs and did they need them. They were playing when we arrived early and they kept playing for almost three hours! Let's do the math considering an average punk song is 3 minutes long and a band takes about a 15 minute break every hour.

Equations are one of Veronica's favorite things.

That’s a lot of music and the band was up for it. They played a few fan favorites twice and ended with “Let’s Go to the Beach.”

Some highlights from the night included “Bury the World,” “Cartoon Therapy,”and a fan requested “Queen Bee.” Laura, former drummer of Kauz of Affliction, joined the band for a few songs. We loved having an impromptu women’s jam, just Laura and AJ Slay. There was one more surprise guest as AJ and Trey’s daughter jumped on stage for a song, getting the crowd running around. Towards the end of the night, their son delighted the crowd by playing along on air drums, a plastic container and a water bottle.

It was a great night, Erik and Justine of Kauz of Affliction were in attendance, we caught up with them and learned they have an exciting 2025 ahead of them.  We’ll be catching up with both bands here very soon with the interviews on our YouTube channel. Trey Wonder and the Graveyard Thunder returns to the Hilo Town Market on January 25th with Kauz of Affliction and other guests.

This was our first visit to KaiLoki’s Restaurant and Bar and look forward to returning to it.  How many times do you get to start a mosh pit under the stars  in the  “Southernmost bar in the US?” It’s little things like this that help make the Big Island a special place to see live music. Get out and support live and local music, and we’ll see you in the pit.

Peace, Love & Mosh Pits
