(Hilo, Hawai’i, 12.7.2024) Strung Out wrapped up their tour of Hawai’i last night in Hilo. Fans packed the Hilo Town Market to watch and mosh, making it a highly energetic night punk/metal show, with the bands and the crowd playing hard all night long.
Sentient Thrash Dummies (STD) started off the evening. They continue to grow as a band with each passing performance. With their youth, speed and energy they brought to the stage, performing a fast 10-song set that included “No Class,” “Rise Up,” “Until Then,” and finishing the night with ‘Slaughter.” Long after their set is done you’ll find them dancing around in the pit giving it all they have. They later received a shout out by headliner, Strung Out, during their set. The future of punk/metal in Hilo, if you have not had a chance to catch them do yourself a favor and do it.
In between sets, Selector Kaihewalu was spinning our favorite rock songs. This gave everyone a chance to catch their breath and head outside to enjoy the cool night air and a crescent moon.
Square Shapes from Kauai was up next performing as a 3-piece this evening sans the drummer, with the bass player filling in on the drums. This was the first time ever playing those songs as the drummer. As their set progressed lead singer Sonny bantered with the crowd and Adam blistered on the guitar and the crowd really got into them. Square shapes ran through a set of 13 songs opening with “Don’t Do It,” “Jalama,” their love of “Burritos” and ended the night with “Americon.” MPL looks forward to catching Square Shapes again on the Big Island.
Hilo Town Market was packed by the time El Sancho brought the noise. Alan had to swap out his wireless for a pink cord which limited his dancing in the pit with Tony and Nate entertaining with riffs and jokes. The pit started when El Sancho hit hard and heavy, started off the night with “Never Listen,” and jumped through El Sancho favorites “How to Kill a Zombie”, “God Hates Flags,’” ended the evening with “Bad Dad.” El Sancho really got the crowd riled up for Strung Out.
When Strung Out hit the stage with “Future Ghosts” off their new album “Dead Rebellion,” the pit went from 0-100 in a second with bodies flailing around all night long. The crowd brough the energy and spread the love as Strung Out’s setlist spanned their career with classic tracks “Analog”, “Firecracker”, “Razor sex” before they ended the night with “Matchbook.” At the end of any great concert, the crowd spills out into the parking lot, hot, sweaty and exhausted.
Shout out to the audience last night, great energy from everyone. Fun with hard hitting pits all night long made for a great evening. We saw many members of the Big Island music community with Kauz of Affliction K-O-A, Two Years Apart and at least one of the members of Nancy Boy in attendance. There is a lot of buzz going around town and 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year. It’s a great time to be a part of all this, won’t you join us in the pit?
Peace, Love & Mosh Pits,
Grom
