Stalag 13/Terminally Ill/The Hajj/K-O-A/STD in Hilo, Hawai'i

Updated: Oct 14, 2024

Old School Punk was at its finest last night in Hilo as Stalag 13 tore it up at the Hilo Town Market.  The Big Island was represented well with Kauz of Affliction and SentientThrash Dummies opening the show with the crowd responding  immediately, starting up the first pit of the night. STD’s fans showed up in full force, keeping the pit jumping all night.

Next up was Ocean View’s own Kauz of Affliction, they kept the momentum going with their set, with songs ‘Dizzy’ ‘Think For Yourself’ and of course ‘The F*** Song’.  Mosh Play Live thanks K-O-A for all their work behind the scenes that some of you may not get to see. From the sound, to the ticketbooth if K-O-A is on the bill, you know they’re working hard. Thanks Erik and Justine.

The Hajj was up next, MPL had a reunion of sorts as Freddie Al-Hajj (Bassist Subsurface

Tension) joined his brother Phil for a musical journey incorporating many styles of music making for an eclectic set.  I look forward to listening to Freddie and his brother some more.

With Freddie pulling double duty this evening, next up was Terminally Ill, a Rock/Rap outfit from Southern California. A 7-piece setup,  It’s a set that is hard to describe, you really had to be there, the fans in attendance ate it up.  MPL also got to hang out with singer Ryan Risetter. Ryan was out in front of the stage for all the bands tonight jamming  with the rest of us. We hope to see both bands back on the Big Island again sometime soon.

The Hilo Town Market was a hot sweaty mess by the time Stalag 13 hit the stage, but Hilo was up for it.  The pit was large and wild as lead singer Ron Bair and the band jammed through a 21 song set, opening the show with ‘No Impressions’ and whipping through their catalog with ‘I Don’t Need It’, ‘Black and Gray’ and ‘Contagion’.  For the encore, vocalist Ron Baird asked everyone to gather at the front of the stage. The song ‘Stepping Stone’ originally done by the Monkees was next and for those unfamiliar of why a band like Stalag 13 would cover the Monkees you’ll need to check out your Punk Rock History. Punk legend Minor Threat covered “Stepping Stone’ all the way back in 1984, and the song has never been the same. The crowd went nuts screaming the lyrics into Ron Baird’s mic, thrashing madness abounded, what a way to end a killer night as Stalag 13 sent the fans home satisfied  and exhausted.

Lastly, let's talk about the audience, there was a phenomenal crowd on hand for this show with the biggest pit Mosh Play Live has seen on the Big Island since our arrival.  The diverse crowd had older and younger fans mixing it up or bopping on the sidelines. This was really a special show tonight, here’s to many more!  Get out and support live and local music

Peace, Love & Mosh Pits
