MoshPlayLive Day of the Dead Show Recap

(Hilo, Hawai'i, 01 November 2024) On a dark and stormy night, Boom Corps crashed onto the Big Island music scene with their first ever live performance.  Mosh Play Live was lucky enough to be there for the forming of Hilo’s newest 3-piece rock outfit. And excited to host the concert when everyone heard them for the first time. From the reaction of the crowd soon after they hit the stage, you could say they made an impact.  Starting off their set with a rendition of “Midnight Moses,”  they had the crowd moving,  but it was when they went from “Voodoo Child” into “Atomic Punk” that Guitarist Colsen Balai’s guitar work grabbed the attention of those in attendance.  if you haven’t caught any video of Boom Corps do yourself a favor and check them out. There is a live recording of the Day of the Dead show on Kukuau Studio’s Youtube channel. We’re already excited for Boom Corps’ next show!

With the crowd pumped and ready for more, Riptonite was up next with a selection of songs covering several decades of Rock ‘n Roll. Vocalist Chip Brown ripped through “Aqualung” and AC-DC’s “Walk Over You” of which I’m a huge fan of and really enjoy Riptonite’s version of it. The crowd enjoyed the set, singing and rocking along the entire time  Riptonite is working on some new songs and we look forward to hearing them in future sets.

Next up, our favorite extraterrestrial space aliens returned to  Hilo and beamed us all aboard.  Guitarist Drew and drummer Rani took us into outer space and beyond with “First Ride,” “Can't Let it Go,” and “Island Fever” to name but just a few.  If you haven’t had the Goza experience, you need to catch this amazing duo from Pleiades.

Whatever, Heather  stormed the stage next for the final set of the night with the Smashing Pumpkin song “Cherub” which you can see on BigDogBroDave’s YouTube channel.  Vocalist Shaye Leeper took turns singing on the stage and on the dance floor while covering “Brick by Boring Brick.” A super fast headbanging experience of Metallica’s “Fuel” chugged along hard and heavy with guitarists Mike Pollard and John Baldwin playing fast and nasty while drummer Todd Oldham and Bassist Randy Hirokawa provided the groove.  Whatever, Heather finished the evening with “Smells Like Teen Spirit’ with Shaye singing and dancing amongst the crowd that filled the dance floor.

Mosh Play Live would like to thank everyone who attended the show.  We would like to recognize the fans, whose energy and excitement were evident from the first note until the last chord was stroked.  Thank you to the volunteers who helped out behind the scenes and visibly during set changes. To  Kukuau Studio, Boom Corps, Riptonite, Goza and Whatever, Heather, we thank you.  Mosh Play Live looks forward to showcasing the many artists from the Big Island and beyond. Stay tuned, this was just the beginning.  Come out and support live and local music!
