Monday Night Jazz Jam

Off the beaten path in downtown Hilo, right off Kilauea Ave lies one of Hilo’s best kept secrets. Kukuau Studio is home to the longest running Jazz Jam in the State of Hawai’i. Since its opening in 2015, Kukuau Studio has become the place to be every Monday night. Musicians, dancers and the audience support the Monday Night Jazz Jam, on holidays too, including Christmas.

Circle Monday, June 10th on your calendar, to help Kukuau Studio celebrate  its 400th consecutive (minus Covid) Monday Night Jazz Jam. Owner Bub Pratt is especially excited for the event as “there are plans in the works” for the big night. Want a seat?  Be there by 7pm or you may find yourself looking around for a place to sit. By 7:30 the place is packed with all ages from babies to boomers and even the non-dancers are swaying side to side.

MoshPlayLive (MPL) recently learned the  history of the Monday Night Jazz Jam from Bub and Waffles (sometimes drummer, all times anywhere she is needed from saying, “Hello,” to mopping a spill.)  Bub says, “I put a lot of work into it in the beginning, advertising for local musicians and eventually a small core group of dedicated players said they wanted to play.” Some nights, the original drummer, John Robinson, can still be found behind the 1950s drum set he’s helped refurbish through the years.

Don’t let this intimidate your inner jazz  musician or vocalist as the Monday Night Jazz Jam invites you to sit in, but make sure you know your stuff “as this is a step above Karaoke.”  MPL enjoys the fun on Monday nights and can attest to the talent that graces their stage.

MPL will be there to celebrate and report on Kukua Studio’s 400th Jazz Jam, June 10th from 6pm-9pm sharp. To be a great neighbor, the music stops at 9 pm - everyone is invited to continue to hang out inside. If you're on the Big Island on a Monday night, Hilo is the place to make new friends. And as Bub would say on a Monday night “to share a consensual hug.”

Peace Love and Mosh Pits,

Graham
