Metallaulea in Hilo, Hawai'i 9/7/24

You know a show is good when the review for the show is up a little later than normal.  Metallaulea stormed into the Hilo Town Market last night, with music as intense as the rains that fell throughout the evening.  Before we get into the bands let’s talk about the crowd.  From the first notes from Thrash-O-Matix to the ending sounds of Show Me Dragon, the crowd was incredible all night long. They danced, they sang and most importantly they got to see an incredible night of music. Each band brought their own unique stylings, with some musicians performing double duty, it truly showed the strength of this loud and growing community. This writer is feeling the effects of constant headbanging today and I’m sure I'm not alone in that sentiment.

Thrash-O-Matix started off the evening with their signature covers of Black Sabbath and Judas Priest added to their mix with covers of Foreigner and a rousing version of Jane’s Addiction’s Been Caught Stealing that caught the audience’s attention.

The much heralded return of Mataleo  arrived in thunderous fashion.  The loud screaming chords of Pantera filled the air for much of their set, bringing that much needed aggression to do Pantera justice. Mixing this in with some old school Sepultura covers made for a brutal 45-minute affair.  Special shout out to bassist Chris Walden who did double duty, playing with Thrash-O-Matix.

Lead vocalist Jeremiah Augustine continued vocal duty with Cellar, along with Rattlebonez Guitarist Nmir, and Drummer Bam Bam joined the fray. This writer was recovering from the previous set, and still enjoyed the set.  Bassist Blue Augustine performed a welcomed cover of the Cranberries ‘Zombie”.

Show Me Dragon hit the stage joking to the audience that their sound wasn’t quite as heavy as the previous acts, but they brought the noise nonetheless.  Covering the Scorpions, Tesla, Guns and Roses, ending the night with the crowd chanting ‘Die” as Metallica’s ‘Creeping Death’ echoed into the nighttime air.  The younger crowd stuck around to the very end and really seemed to enjoy Show Me Dragon’s set.

Last night showcased a lot of talent from the Big Island, the size and the enthusiasm of the crowd all night was amazing.  Thank you for getting out to support local musicians and live music. This show like many others on the Big Island was open for all ages and it was nice to see  families in attendance and the younger crowd rocking out.  There are a lot more shows to come in 2024, go see one tonight!

Peace Love & Mosh Pits,
