(Kalapana, Hawaii 1.3.2025) -- One unique aspect of music on the Big Island is its venues. MoshPlayLive continues to explore the venues that dot the Big Island by journeying to Kalapana and Uncles Awa Club. The venue itself is worth a visit. The design of the venue provides plenty of room for dancing and easy access to the Awa Bar and Farmer’s Market vendors that populate the grounds. With plenty of parking, and free admission for keiki (children), it truly feels like you are visiting the owner's living room.
On the first Friday of the month, Uncles Awa Club presents First Friday Pau Hana hosted by Jahred Namaste which includes local Grindz (good food) and music. Jahred warmed up the crowd, dancers swayed and a keiki on a tiny bicycle rode among the dancers. Then Drew Daniels took the stage with a rotating cast of musicians including Pat Eskidlsen, Imani Avanti, Michaeloha on Trumpet, Jahred on drums. While Lopaka Rootz was setting up Hope Jj Medford joined Jahred for a drum duo.
Artists intermingled and filled the night air with the sounds of reggae. The crowd at Uncle Robert's had built up through the evening. The dance floor filled as Lopaka Rootz brought his unique Reggae sounds, including a very nice Country/Reggae crossover of George Strait’s “Blue Clear Sky." Lopaka Rootz is in the middle of a string of shows here on the Big Island, with shows in Ocean View, Kailua-Kona and Waimea coming up in the next week.
Good positive energy all night long from everyone. Good music and good food - what more do you need? The $10 admission (keiki are free) and ample parking made for a most enjoyable road trip and evening. MPL will return to Uncles Awa Club on February 7th for the next First Friday Pau Hana with musical guests Ydine and PunaKat.
Until next time, Peace, Love & Mosh Pits
