Lava Shack 09.14.2024: Rattlebonez/Riptonite/Mataleo

The walls of the Lava shack shook as Rattlebonez, Riptonite and Mataleo took the stage to close the doors of the Lava Shack in it’s current incarnation. The crowd was alive all night long and it was a packed house as everyone wished former owner CJ well. It was not always the smoothest of nights, but all 3 bands set out and delivered a set that would be etched in the minds of fans in attendance.

Rattlebonez hit the stage first, and the crowd quickly filled the dance floor quickly. Rattlebonez play an updated albeit shortened set. During their rendition of Metallica’s ‘Phantom Lord’, lead singer Dave Isemoto, with guitar in hand, joined the dance floor. Mataleo singer Jeremiah Augustine joined Rattlebonez on stage for System of a Down’s ‘Toxicity.’ Rattlebonez sprinkled in some Queensryche, early Iron Maiden and other headbanging melodies and Guitarist Nmir morphed into a fern during is performance but still managed his guitar duties. (Editors note, this is untrue Nmir was just hidden behind a speaker and a fern.)

Riptonite was up next, I enjoyed their reworked beginning of Jethro Tull’s ‘Locomotive Breath’, sounds of Ozzy and Thin Lizzy filled the Lava Shack, Riptonite ended the evening with a raucous cover of AC-DC’s ‘Walk All Over You.’ Chris, Dave, Chip and Quint continue to impress those in attendance with their blend of high energy rock and roll. We welcome Riptonite to Kukuau Studio on Friday November 1st.

Mataleo brought the noise and their love of Pantera to the Lava Shack, truly a set for the heaviest of headbangers. From Jeremiah and the band shredding ‘Cowboys from Hell’ to ‘This Love,’ they played hard and fast. Being a rock n roll show on a Saturday night, things started to get a little wild on the inside, with the Lava Shack packed and rocking. But hey, it’s Rock n Roll and it seemed fitting.

Club music filled the Lava Shack in between sets, offering members of the musical community a taste of something different. It all added to the ambiance of the evening that made this a special event. The music started earlier in the day and ended in the wee hours of the morning. Mosh Play Live was able to catch Playing in Traffic for the first time and dug their cover of Tool’s ‘Sober.’ Shout out to the Lava Shack House Band for filling the air with musical energy.

It sounds as if the shows will continue under the new owners. This is welcomed news as many bands enjoy playing the venue. Remember to get out and support live music, Saturday night was a great example of music bringing the people together for fun and celebration. The Heavy Metal scene on the Big Island is getting louder and louder, won’t you join us in the pit?
