Big Island Metal Bash Night 2

What a crazy night last night for the 2nd night of the Big Island Metal Bash. First off a special thank you to Damien and Chelsea for putting this event together.

Inflatables, Pool Noodles, a Cow God and 12 different musicians were all components for the ‘puppet sh**show’ that is Green Jelly.  Founding member/ Vocals Bill Manspeaker had the lights turned off in the venue, turning the stage area into an array of oddities, glow in the dark inflatables and well, pool noodles, hundreds of pool noodle, Military grade pool noodles, used as weapons of mass destruction for the entire evening.

Orders were barked out and Green Jelly had some fans head outside to get a puppet head for the evening, Rambo, Spongebob, Little Pigs, even a guy with a pumpkin on his head made an appearance.  Once back in they led the march to ‘Anarchy in the UK,’ that eventually morphed into one of the many mosh pits that filled the weekend. Speaking of moshing, it was quite an experience wearing one of those heads all night in the pit and I would do it again!

All band members made it to the floor at one point or another to join fans in the pit as they gleefully circled them whacking them with pool noodles.  This writer could fill a few pages of what went on last night to fill your head with images of something beautifully macabre. It was a performance that needed to be witnessed live.  Green Jelly sent the crowd home with the 3 Little Pigs, friggin heavy and so much fun live, and remember Green Jelly Suxx!

The New Plague brought their brand of heavy metal, with some minor equipment issues during the set they still put on a heavy set, keeping the heads banging and the pit moving.

Wisconsin-based Putrid Pile is a one man band. Shaun LaCanne brought a level of brutality and speed to Hawaii for the first time and garnered the respect of all in attendance. The pit was hardcore for this one, bodies hit the floor and people kissed concrete, all signs of a most excellent set.

Lithobius, from Maui, was up next. This 4-piece Extreme Death-Doom band captivated the crowd with songs inspired by Conan and Vikings. Well worth checking out, Mosh Play Live hopes that Lithobius returns to the Big Island soon.

Damien Boynton who put this event together opened the 2nd night with a set that set the tone for the rest of the evening, Stoned to Death opened the show, bringing the sound of old school metal and singing songs about what they know best - weed.

Congratulations to Damien and Chelsea Hardman for a successful two-night event.  The energy inside and outside the venue was high all weekend. The ability to mingle with the artists before the show added that something you don’t get by going to bigger venues. The metal scene has landed on the Big Island. The fans came out in support of this event and that was great to see.

Our local bands had a chance to shine this weekend with Mataleo and Badass Noise representing the Big Island.

To the fans in attendance, the scene thanks you. The enthusiasm and support you showed all weekend, brought the heaviest pit I’ve been in since arriving on the Big Island, “Hell yeah!” Mosh Play Live thanks the members of Green Jelly that I had a chance to talk to prior to the show. Thanks also to Artist Tony Koehl from Las Vegas who had some seriously good artwork available.

Until next time, Peace Love & Mosh Pits
